Henry Ford Henry Ford is an iconic figure in American history, best known as the founder of Ford Motor Company, and for his revolutionary contributions to the development of the modern automobile. Born in 1863 in Dearborn, Michigan, Henry Ford was one of eight children. His father was a farmer, and Ford grew up helping out on the family farm. He received a limited education, attending school for only a few years, and was largely self-taught. Despite his lack of formal education, Ford had an insatiable curiosity about how things worked. He was always tinkering with machines and devices, trying to figure out how they could be made better. This curiosity led him to become an apprentice at a machine shop in Detroit at the age of 16. After several years of working as an apprentice and journeyman machinist, Ford became interested in building his own automobile.
